Once the sun set and the clocks chimed 8:00 pm, a whole host of characters made their way down senior Monique Chan’s driveway. This host was, of course, comprised of the over many students dressed in different disguises that were filing into the annual Girl’s Service League on Friday, October 25.
One of the most important aspects of any GSL dance is the theme, and this year the GSL cabinet did a wonderful job picking the theme “The Seven Deadly Sins.” As always, everyone was encouraged to dress according to the theme, and freshman Mackenzie Lee expressed, “I was really surprised and impressed by the creativity of people’s outfits.” With costumes ranging from green with envy to red with wrath, everyone had fun talking about and admiring each other’s outfits.
The GSL cabinet, comprised of seniors Chan, Ranti Odujinrin, Jenny Lamb, Hannah Wear, and Gillian Feldmeth and juniors Brooke Mulligan and Kelsey McWilliams, worked tirelessly from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. om the day of the dance to set up all their decorations, lights, and the drinks. Playing off their “Seven Deadly Sins” theme, the GSL organizers made every table represent a sin, drew signs representing the cardinal sins Gluttony, Vanity, Wrath, Lust, Sloth, Envy, and Greed, to post on the fences surrounding the dance floor, and hung lights all around the tennis court that had been converted to the dancing and seating area. Sophomore Hunter Merryman commented, “I really liked the atmosphere and the decorations. And the music was great.”
The dance was DJed by senior Blaine Ohigashi, who kept the students dancing throughout the night, closing with the now-familiar tune “Don’t Stop Believin” by Journey. Chilled beverages and bowls of snacks provided by the GSL helped fuel the students through a night of fun. All proceeds from this dance go to the GSL’s charity, the Descanso Gardens’ Harvest Gardens, which provides students with special needs the therapeutic benefits of gardening. GSL’s next major fundraiser is their 2nd annual dance recital in February.
